XCR15 – Round 4 – Bundoora Cross Country – 13 June 2015
June 15, 2015
Victorian Cross Country Championship races at Bundoora 13th June 2015
This event and the Sandown Relays are the most fiercely contested events on the AV Winter calendar. This year we had an incredibly good day with blue skies, temperate and only a breeze, rather than the strong winds earlier in the week. The day is combined with the school cross country events which occurred earlier in the day.
The AV Races started with the Under 20 women’s race, where Box Hill had one entrant, Lucy Steele, who performed creditably to finish 18th in25:07 for the 6 kilometre course.
The Under 20 men’s 8 k race followed and Box Hill had five representatives. Zac Hunter ran a great race and finished full of running in 17th place (27:47). He seemed to accelerate in the second lap and passed others near him. Any time under 28 minutes on this testing course is a good effort. In 20th place was Thomas Sellwood who ran brilliantly to finish 20th, recording 28:03. Thomas had to run two divisions outside his correct age group because his school failed to enter any of their students. He should actually have been running in the Under 16 race, so this mighty effort was extremely impressive. He clearly has a great future in our sport. Raymond Chan ran the two lap course which was a great deal further than the 800 metre races he has been performing so well in recently. He finished 34th in 29:31. Jack Prendergast was 41st (32:54) and Carlos Norman was 42nd (33:55).
The senior women’s race was the next event and Box Hill had ten competitors in the 8 kilometre event. Gemma Maini (Frankston) secured her first Victorian title winning in the time of 28:55 from Karina Fyfe (Glenhuntly) in 29:00, with Sarah Waters (Geelong) third in 29:15. June Petrie was our first athlete listed in the provisional results, finishing 39th (32:56), winning the gold medal in her age group. June picked up 10 places in the second lap, a most impressive effort. Second across the line for Box Hill in 72nd place was Amanda Harper (35:28). Amanda held 88th place midway through the first lap so she also came home with a wet sail. Liza Henshall, 95th recorded 36:55, followed by 103rd-placed Pia Hunter (37:27) and 109th-placed Talitha Crawford (37:51). Others to compete were Megan Sloane who finished 143rd, Amelia Savige, 152nd, Caitlin Harrison, 161st, Kelly Ulf, 172nd and Nicole Smith, 179th.
Our senior men’s teams were very strong and we had 22 athletes finish the course, and four complete Box Hill teams finished, which was a very pleasing outcome. The race started uphill with a redesigned course that many athletes said they preferred over previous iterations of the course, which could be quite brutal.
There were 392 finishers, so it was a large field despatched by the starter at 2.30 p.m. Immediately after the start, a sea of grey surged to prominent positions and by the halfway point in the first lap, two Box Hill athletes were well clear of the rest of the field. Rhys Jones, who has run a number of times for Box Hill previously, is based in South Australia and flew over to test his fitness against the best that Victoria could offer. Rhys took the lead within 500 metres of the start and opened up an eighty metre break in the first lap. Will Potter also ran clear of the pursuing field to hold second position about thirty metres clear of the pursuing pack. Steve Kelly held equal third position, running with Nick Wightman (Geelong), Doug Hamerlok (Frankston), Toby Rayner (Glenhuntly)and Nick Van Raaphorst (Ballarat). Daniel Clark held 9th position, James O’Connell was in 14th position and Nick Baggott was 18th, just ahead of Michael Dowel, 20th. Steve Dinneen realised just before the start his timing chip was not secured to his shoe, as is required and, whilst he was attending to this, the starter had despatched the field, so he went off nearly 600 metres behind the field, not an ideal situation. He also had the misfortune to have been ill over the last fortnight, curtailing his training completely, so today was not his day.
By the middle of the second lap, Rhys Jones had maintained his lead over all pursuers. Ninety metres separated him from the rest of the field. Toby Rayner and Nick Wightman had ranged up into second and third places with five centimetres separating them. Hamerlok was next, a miniscule distance in front of Steve Kelly. Will Potter had paid a bit of a price for his early exuberance, but was running with excellent cadence not far behind, and best of all for the club, holding his form and not conceding ground to the athlete behind him. Legend Steve Moneghetti suddenly appeared out of nowhere, in 16th place, having overtaken James O’Connell, 17th, Daniel Clark, 18th, Nick Baggott, 21st and Michael Dowel, 22nd. Oscar Robinson held 34th position, John Meagher, 37th place, with Klarie McIntyre in 41st position. Steve Dinneen had made up incredible ground to have lifted to 54th place, just ahead of Welday Mebrahtu, 55th. Michael Vaughan was 65th and Dave Jimenez was running powerfully in 85th place.
At the 9 k mark, Rhys Jones was still holding a substantial lead over Toby Rayner who had a marginal lead of 10 to 20 centimetres over Nick Wightman. Steve Kelly was in fourth position and running so well it appeared that he might breach the gap between the runners ahead of him, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. Hamerlok was a little distance behind Steve, with Will Potter still displaying grit and determination in holding 6th place ahead of Nick van Raaphorst (Ballarat). It was then time for your correspondent to make his way back to the finish.
The final lap saw more action at the front of the field with Nick Wightman getting away from Toby Rayner, in pursuit of race leader, Rhys Jones. Wightman put in a withering finishing burst and began to make significant ground on Rhys Jones. Perhaps 600 metres from the finish he claimed first place, leaving Rhys in his wake. Rhys held his form and did not allow Rayner to pass him. Rayner won the bronze ahead of the fast finishing Steve Kelly, who crossed the line in 4th place (although claiming the bronze medal). Steve had no intention of allowing Hamerlok to beat him in the concluding stages of the race. Steve is surely reclaiming the great form he demonstrated in 2012 and 2013 and it seems reasonable to assume that before the end of the season he will improve his position on the dais. Not long after, Will Potter, who had run very courageously, crossed the finish in 6th position, another excellent effort. Will is having his best ever season and is performing very consistently at each outing. Then we saw a procession of well-placed Box Hill athletes, starting with Daniel Clark, 16th, who had fought back tenaciously from the middle of the race, with Michael Dowel next across the line in 17th. Michael ran a fine last lap, overtaking five athletes, thereby demonstrating he is on the rise. Shortly after, James O’Connell ran through the heavily taped finish structure in 20th position, in yet another impressive performance. James has kept a very high standard after numerous breakthroughs in the summer. (The inflatable AV finish line had sprung a leak and the western side of the base was covered in gaffer tape to prevent it from complete collapse.)
Nick Baggott also ran particularly well to place 23rd and was unlucky not to make the Division 1 team. Like James, he has had a marvellous Winter season to date and has become a fixture at the top end of the field this year, attaining heights that may have been thought of as improbable just a year or two ago. It is worth noting that he would have been the highest scoring or one of the highest-scoring athletes in many of the other Division 1 teams, and he would have been a scoring member of the top team in every other Division 1 team. Oscar Robinson came 40th, mentioning he had not been feeling at the top of his form. All his other 2015 races have demonstrated he would normally have placed at least 10 to fifteen places ahead of where he was on the day. Steve Dinneen picked up another 10 places in the third lap of Bundoora Park to cross in 44th position. John Meagher was 48th and second in his age division, behind Steve Moneghetti, which was an excellent accomplishment. Klarie McIntyre placed 53rd, Welday Mehbrahtu was 76th, David Jimenez ran through in 83rd position and Michael Vaughan also secured a top 100 position completing the course in 90th place.
Box Hill has unofficially won the Premier Division title in this race and we believe has claimed second place in Division 2 behind Athletics Essendon. Therefore this was a very good day for our men’s teams and cements us in first place at the head of Division 1 and in a very competitive place in Division 2, with six more races on the calendar.

XCR15 – Round 3 – Ballarat Road Races – 30 May 2015
June 1, 2015
15 K Road Championship Lake Wendouree Ballarat 30 May 2015
Ballarat has hosted the 15 k road race now for a number of years. It is a flat course consisting of an out and back loop at the start of the race of around 2.6 k, followed by two anti-clockwise laps of the lake before a sprint into the finishing chute.
The race was the third on the Athletics Victoria winter program this year. A large Box Hill contingent travelled to Ballarat to compete this year. On arrival we found that the conditions were mild by Ballarat standards, with a moderate breeze and temperature of around 12°C. There was a small amount of drizzle later in the 15 k race, but conditions were mainly fine, although cool. The course is a bit exposed on the opposing side of the course to where the finish is situated.
The junior 5 K Road championship preceded the main race and Box Hill had five representatives competing: Murray Lovass, who finished 13th in the under 14 race (19:35), Lucas Pamminger who placed 22nd in the under 18 race (18:10), Zoe Schwerkolt who finished 16th in the under 18 girls’ race (24:16), Zac Hunter who was 20th in the under 20 race (16:50) and Carlos Norman who finished 30th in the under 20 race (19:16).
Following on from our success in the men’s 8 K Premier division at Drouin, we had many senior men’s entries for this race. We were less well-represented in the women’s race.
When the gun fired we had a large number of Box Hill men at the front end of the field. When the field returned to the starting point, having completed the initial out-and-back loop, there were around ten athletes at the head of the field, including Box Hill’s Steve Kelly running in third place. Others in the pack included Brady Threlfall (Geelong), John Dutton (Frankston), Josh Harris (Frankston), Nick Earl (Melbourne University) and Nick van Raaphorst (Ballarat). In the second pack, we had three athletes: Peter Green 12th, James O’Connell, 13th and Will Potter, 17th. Michael Dowel was 18th, followed by Dion Finocchiaro. Klarie McIntyre was just behind this last group which included our runners, John Meagher was prominent (about 41st or so), as were Nick Baggott (about 43rd), Welday Mebrahtu (about 50th) and David Jimenez (about 64th). We were looking a real chance in the men’s Premier division race, at this early stage, with the only other club possibilities for victory being with Geelong, Frankton and Melbourne University.
The women’s race saw Sinead Diver (South Melbourne) and Gemma Maini (Frankston) heading the field, with Virginia Moloney (Collingwood) third not far behind. Julie Norney was our best placed athlete, 9th. Bec Rosel (invitation) was 14th, with Grace Brown in the mid-20s. June Petrie was around the mid-forties and Amanda Harper was about the mid-sixties.
At the end of the first full lap, with one full lap of the lake to run, Nick Wightman had got to the front of the field, marginally in front of Josh Harris, with Steve Kelly really close to both. Brady Threlfall (Geel.), Nick Earl (Melb. Uni.) were further back in fourth and fifth positions with Van Raaphorst in sixth. Davy (Frank.), Ben Ashkettle (Don.) Liam Adams (Ess.), Jack Rayner (Wes) and Julian Spence (Geel.) were the next athletes to run through. Peter Green was in 12th place, James O’Connell was 13th and Will Potter was 17th. Michael Dowel held 18th position with Dion Finocchiaro 25th and Klarie McIntyre was 28th. Oscar Robinson was place further back in 29th position. There were a number of other Box Hill athletes in the top 60 (John Meagher, Nick Baggott and Welday Mebrahtu), so our position had firmed in respect of Division 1 and 2 team placings.
The women’s race showed a tight battle between Sinead Diver and Gemma Maini, with Viginia Moloney not far behind in 3rd place. Julie Norney was in 9th position, Bec Rosel, 14th, Grace Brown 26th, June Petrie, 43rd and Amanda Harper 63rd.
At the business end of the race, Nick Wightman gained the upper hand and drew 12 seconds clear of Steve Kelly who performed impressively in his return from injury. Wightman is in extremely good form at present and has won the two individual titles contested this winter season. Steve had opened up a 17 break over third-placed Josh Harris. This underscores Steve’s improving form and it won’t be long before he gets the central podium finish, based on his competitive performance to date this year. Not long after we had a stream of Box Hill athletes finishing. Peter Green finished 13th, an extremely impressive effort. He held things together very well over the whole distance. James O’Connell backed up his excellent run at Drouin with an even better effort at Ballarat to finish 15th. Will Potter ran very strongly to claim 17th position. Will probably prefers the cross country over the road, but this effort was certainly noteworthy and it laid part of the foundation for Box Hill’s team victory. Dion Finocchiaro finished only 20 seconds later to record 21st, with Michael Dowel, 26th completing the Premier division team. Next place and seven seconds behind Michael was Oscar Robinson who also performed really well to record 27th place. A ten second gap was what separated Oscar from Klarie McIntyre who finished 31st. Nick Baggott ran probably the longest AV race of his career and placed 41st, also a fine achievement., John Meagher won his age division in 44th place, with Welday Mebrahtu claiming 51st position followed by David Jimenez, returning to very good form in 61st spot. These runners made up the Division 2 team and at the time of writing it appears reasonably clear that we won Division 2 as well as the Division 1 titles. Trent Collins made the top 100 in placing 97th.
Sinead Diver maintained her lead to the finishing line in the women’s race to beat Gemma Maini from Virginia Moloney in third position. Julie Norney was in 9th place, with Bec Rosel 13th, Grace Brown, who picked up five places in the concluding lap, crossing in 21st position, with June Petrie, 52nd and Amanda Harper, 70th, making up the women’s Premier Division team.

XCR15 – Round 2 – Lardner Park Cross Country – 9 May 2015
Box Hill had a successful day at Lardner Park, winning the men’s premier division team’s event. Steve Kelly continued his successful comeback from surgery, winning the bronze medal. Will Potter finished not far behind in 7th place, probably a career best performance. Daniel Clark finished 14th, Nick Baggott (in his best ever result) was 16th, James O’Connell, 22th and new club member Oscar Robinson filled out Premier Division team finishing in 31st position.
The other outstanding result for the day was a win by Molly McCarthy in the girls under 14 event.

Ian Sloane’s Full Report
We had relatively benign weather conditions at Drouin, although the wind was very strong. Rain threatened but did not eventuate.
We had a better turnout for the senior men’s event than at the relay meeting and it appears that Box Hill has won Premier Division team’s race by a significant margin. The men’s race saw the return to the podium by Steve Kelly, who claimed the bronze medal, in a dashing display of solid running. Steve was pushing the whole way and was in second position at the end of the first lap, in a bunch of about eight athletes all together. Will Potter and Daniel Clark were not far behind with Will running through in 11th with Daniel perhaps six places further back. James O’Connell has been going from strength to strength over the last year and he was only three seconds behind Daniel, with Michael Dowel just behind him. Newly joined member, Oscar Robinson was at the front end of the field somewhere around 35th position. Nick Baggott had a tremendous start as well. John Meagher was prominent, probably in about 50th position or so. Other athletes crossed the halfway point further back (first lap times appear in the results below).
Nick Wightman (Geelong) got away from Douglas Hamerlok (Frankston) and Steve Kelly mid-way to late through the second lap and won his first Victorian title after sprinting flat out down the last slope. Hamerlok placed second and Steve Kelly showed that he has regained fitness after an extended period of injury to claim the bronze medal, which certainly brought great cheer to our supporters. What was happening behind was remarkable, however. Three of our Division 1 or Premier Division athletes had huge breakthroughs. Will Potter made an enormous improvement to take a top 10 position in running seventh. He picked up four places in his second lap which shows a great improvement in strength. Will looks certain to be a permanent member of our top team, and there is no reason to think that he shouldn’t be thinking about doing even better. It was really pleasing to see Daniel Clark run a solid 14th and he appears to have regained an upward trajectory with his fitness as well. Nick Baggott had a breakthrough race easily eclipsing his previous best Cross Country position with 16th place, just behind Daniel. This was a most welcome outcome, and he should have an excellent winter season as well. James O’Connell has also been enjoying very good form and he also ran a new best placing in finishing 22nd, an excellent result. Completing the Premier Division team was Oscar Robinson who recorded 31st position.
Our Division 2 team also performed well, and although the provisional results were inaccurate at the time of this report being written, it appears that we have placed first or second. The team was made up of John Meagher (45th), Michael Dowel (58th), Welday Mebrahtu (68th), Michael Vaughan (71st), Simon Watson (81st) and David Jimenez (91st). Full results can be found below.
The women’s race was over a four kilometre course, and like the men’s race, produced many muddy legs and clothing. There was a fence to vault and six ditches to jump, the last akin to a quagmire. Sinead Diver (South Melbourne) outclassed Sarah Klein (Frankston) who was second and Virginia Moloney (Collingwood) who was third. In fourth place was Australian World Cross Country representative, Gemma Maini (Frankston). Grace Brown (13th) was our first athlete to finish, Julie Norney finished 18th, with Sarah Cant (46th), Grace Kalac (53rd) and June Petrie (approximately 58th) making up the Premier Division team. We believe that we finished in 5th place.
Earlier in the day, Murray Lovass finished in 9th position in the Under 14 Boys’ event, less than a minute behind the winner.
Molly McCarthy won the Girls’ Under 14 race in a really impressive display of running (she was fifth in the race overall, which included boys in the same age group, so this shows what a really classy effort she produced).
Alex Ritchie placed 16th in the Under 18 boys’ event, about a minute behind the winner. Alex seems to improve every time he pulls his spikes on and looked strong on the course. Carlos Norman was 31st in the Under 20 men’s race. Amy Atkinson finished 10th in the Under 16 girls’ race, with Tamsyn Lovass finishing 12th.
Genevieve Wah was 14th in the Under 18 girls’ race. Zoe Schwerkolt also competed, but probably due to a chip malfunction was not recorded in the provisional results.
