Congratulations to David Grant, Mohamad Zeed, Flavien Basson, Phillipa Hajdasz and Isabelle Napier who won Victorian Championship titles on the weekend.

David Grant threw 60.53m to take gold in the men’s javelin and Mohamad Zeed ran 54.22 to win the 400m hurdles. Again Box Hill athletes dominated the pole vault. Flavien Basson cleared 5.00m to win the men’s event, while Phillipa Hajdasz and Isabelle Napier both went over 3.60m to share the gold medal in the women’s event.

Box Hill had many other athletes put in strong performances. Georgia Griffith lead most of the way in the women’s 800m before finishing a desperately close 3rd in 2:06.93. 17 year old Matt Harcourt stepped up to the open 400m hurdles and finished 3rd in 54.55 and James Filshie took the bronze in the men’s pole vault.

THANKS FOR DOING THE SURVEY

Thank you to everyone who completed the Club’s online survey. We received 102 responses and an analysis of the results will be in this year’s Annual Report.

An initial viewing of the survey results seem to present some common themes which are summarised below: (ratings are a maximum of 5.00,where 5.00 is very good):

The XCR season was rated highly at 4.62 and there are no major issues (one person noted that Sydney’s City2Surf is very popular so don’t hold events that clash with it)

The AV Shield season was rated 3.99.  The strong consensus was that there are not enough rounds – only 5 respondents wanted fewer rounds, with 65% of respondents wanting 11 or 12 rounds – some wanted even more, right up to Easter each year

Over 80% of respondents were happy to have more Shield rounds at the expense of the Knockout competition

Not surprisingly, Box Hill was the most preferred venue for Shield rounds and Casey Fields was least preferred (now that Box Hill has a new hammer cage, AV Shield rounds can be scheduled at Box Hill in 2016/2017)

Zone vs Zone was rated 3.49 and generally considered too busy, crowded, hard to book events unless done in advance online (one person arrived 90 minutes before the first field event and couldn’t get into an event until 5 hours later!), too long – the number of people meant that it always ran late and officials were stretched.  The very strong view is that it should be discontinued – members are interested in their Club, not their Zone

Knockout was rated 3.30 which is less than the unpopular Zone vs Zone and the strong view was to replace it with more Shield rounds or competitions like the popular Milers Club.

Milers Club – everyone loves it – it was rated 4.89 and it appears to be the most popular competition – no significant changes to it were suggested

Rare Air was rated 4.56 but only 10 respondents had competed in it.  Some suggested adding high jump to the evening’s events

The best aspects of the Club were stated to be – friendly, good track and coaches, good team spirit, welcoming, good athletes and a diverse range of ages, good facilities and history, strong community feel about the Club

Aspects of the Club that could be improved included better facilities (not well kept, untidy, toilets not good), working bees to address this, some track resurfacing is needed (eg long jump runway), gym to be cleaned up with better equipment, better communication with members about the Club’s plans, changes to the uniform, attract more members perhaps using social media, get more sponsorship and promote what is one of the best athletic clubs in Australia

Preferred spending is on the gym/equipment and shade cloth, although other matters come very close behind

There is a strong desire to get AV Shield rounds back to Box Hill in 2016/2017

REGISTRATION FEES

Athletics Victoria have announced a new fee structure for the 2016/17 season.

As you are probably aware, your annual registration fee is made up of two components, an Athletics Victoria fee and a Box Hill Club fee. Over the past few seasons AV have increased their fees several times. In most instances Box Hill has actually reduced the Club fee to absorb these increases.

This season open aged athletes have paid a $170 AV fee and a $90 club fee for a total of $260.

AV have announced that their fee will increase from $170 to $225 for the Shield season only (or XCR season only), and up to $300 for both Shield and XCR (although the XCR fee will cover race entries) and there will be entry fees for Knockout and state championships as usual.

Although this is a large increase, AV point out that athletics is still cheaper than many other sports.

As the Club is yet to set its fee for the upcoming season, we are happy to hear your feedback.

VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

Good luck to all the Box Hill Athletes taking part in the state track and field championships at Lakeside Stadium this weekend. Let’s hope that Box Hill can pick up a swag of medals.

WELL DONE VANESSA!

Congratulations to Vanessa Bourne who was the 2nd woman across the line (and 10th overall) in the Buller gorge Marathon in New Zealand last week. Billed as New Zealand’s most scenic athletic event, the course ranges from 100m to 252m above sea level. Vanessa completed this tough course in 3:15:01, less than 16 minutes behind the winner of the men’s race!

KATHRYN QUALIFIES FOR WORLD JUNIORS AS BOX HILL GRABS 13 GOLDS

Box Hill athletes performed brilliantly, winning 13 gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze medals at the Victorian junior track and field championships at Lakeside Stadium last weekend.

One of the highlights of the championships was the effort of Kathryn Brooks who won the under 20 javelin event and twice threw further than the qualifying distance for the world junior championships to be held in Poland in July.

Congratulations to all the Box Hill athletes who performed so well, especially our medalists.

BOX HILL WINS MEN’S DIVISION 1 AND WOMEN’S 40+ PREMIERSHIPS

Box Hill had a great day at the shield finals, winning the men’s division 1 premiership, the women’s over 40 premiership and going incredibly close in the women’s division 1, the men’s under 18 and the men’s over 40 divisions. Thank you to all the athletes who supported the Club and competed so well on Saturday. Thanks also to all those who helped out officiating and those who were there to support the team and to those athletes who might have missed out on a finals spot but competed throughout the season to get our teams to the finals.

Men Division 1

Congratulations to Brett Nuske, Will Seton, David Grant, Mohamad Zeed, Rob Owen, David Thomson, Josiah Becker, Daniel White-Alikakos, Matt Zwarts, Antony Baldwin, Will Potter, James O’Connell, Michael Dowel, Peter Green, Steve Dinneen, Klarie McIntyre, Simon Evans, Andre Waring, Nick Baggott, Zac Hunter, Bouchaib Chefnaoui and Raymond Chan who combined to help Box Hill win the men’s open division 1 Athletics Victoria Shield premiership. Athletes and coaches have put in a real effort this season to make sure that we had our best available team competing in the finals and it paid off on Saturday with a tremendous win. Glenhuntly also had a strong team and the points were close for most of the day, but dominant results in three of the last four events of the day (High Jump, Shot Put and the 800m) saw Box Hill with the victory even before the last event (4x400m).

Men Under 18

The under 18 men’s team came extremely close to winning the premiership this year. This team has been high on quality but low on numbers all season and it was an extremely good effort for this team of just eight boys to come so close to winning the premiership. Sam McDonald and Matt Harcourt did five events each, while Scott McKenzie and Alex Ritchie did the 3000m/800m/4x400m treble and Ned Snibson ran the 200m, 800m and 4x400m.

GOOD LUCK IN THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Good luck to all the Box hill athletes competing in the state junior championships at Lakeside stadium this weekend. Let’s hope we can win a swag of medals! Please note that Box Hill needs to supply club helpers for this event to help with officiating. If you can help please let us know as soon as possible.

WE HAVE A HAMMER CAGE!

Finally the new Box Hill hammer throwing cage is complete. Please look after this new facility. Also be aware when hammer throw training is taking place. Hopefully the completion of our new throwing ring will lead to shield competition returning to Box Hill next summer.

Congratulations to all the athletes who competed so well in this team and let’s hope we can go one better next year.
