Saturday 21 May 2016 – Cruden Farm Cross Country
May 21, 2016
16 K Cross Country Cruden Farm (Langwarrin)
What an inspirational choice of terrain by Athletics Victoria in picking this venue. It was as close to perfect a course for Cross Country, and brilliant terrain. The property belonged to Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, who passed away in 2012. It is a spectacular property, and many athletes stayed on well after the conclusion of the final race to savour the aspect and amenities. The farm is 54 hectares in size and supports livestock as a look at the ground revealed. The Open Men’s race was a will designed course of four laps of four kilometres, and the other races were of shorter lengths, but on the same course as the men ran.
In perfect weather conditions, all the athletes in each race were despatched by Brendan Ferrari, AV’s long time starter.
Thomas Diamond represented Box Hill in the under 14 race and finished a very respectable 8th, recording the time of 15:09 for the 4 K course.
In the men’s under 20 race, Box Hill was represented by Alex Ritchie, who finished 10rth, Jack Prendergast, 22nd and Carlos Norman, 28th. Alex Ritchie is going really well this year and consistently finishes at the front end of the field. Jack and Carlos are also showing improvement and will continue to improve during the winter season.
Tamsyn Lovass competed in the girls’ under 16 race and finished a respectable 11th.
We had two representatives in the women’s under 20 race, Chloe Rosenberg, who ran well to place 9th and Jessie Muirden, who also performed very creditably in finishing 10th position.
In the under 18 boys’ race, Lucan Pamminger ran very impressively to place 9th. Lucas has been improving steadily and this was a fine effort to make the top 10.
The women’s race attracted a field of over 190 competitors. Box Hill was represented by June Petrie, who finished 41st and won her age division, Amanda Harper, who ran a steady race to place 87th, Rachel Johnson, who finished 97t1h, Pia Hunter, 104th and Kerry Putt who finished 130th. We had three other competitors but their names were omitted from the results, so we can only assume that there was a timing chip defect. One of these was Carolyn Fox who recorded the time of 40:49.
In the men’s 16 k cross Country race there was a large field of athletes assembled (around 350 runners). We had a team not quite at full strength, with Steve Dinneen unavailable. However, Box Hill’s depth shone through and we had some exceptional performances which you will read of as this report unfolds.
A group of athletes quickly detached themselves to form the leading group. Nathan Hartigan (Ballarat) decided to crank up the pace and he led. In close attendance were Toby Rayner (GH), Jack Rayner (Wes), Nick Earl (M Uni), Tim Logan (DV) and Nick Wightman. Within striking distance were Will Potter (BH), with James O’Connell breathing down his neck.
By the end of the first lap, Logan dropped away, but all the other athletes noted above were contesting the lead, with Hartigan leading followed by Toby Rayner and Jack Rayner. Nick Earl was next followed by Nick Wightman. Will Potter held 6th position, fractionally ahead of James O’Connell. Five seconds behind these two Box Hill runners was Dion Finocchiara, followed by Nick Baggott a further 10 seconds behind. Andre Waring and Peter Green were also amongst the leading contenders. Michael Dowel looked impressive in this lap and was eight seconds adrift of Peter Green. Ten seconds further back was John Meagher. Chris Bradford was also in the top hundred as was Zac Hunter.
At the end of the third lap Jack and Toby Rayner held a slight lead over Nick Earl and Nathan Hartigan, with a slight gap to Nick Wightman. Then followed Will Poptter, sixth (38:37) and James O’Connell seventh, two seconds down on Will. Dion Finocchiara (38:58) was 19 seconds behind James, in ninth position with Nick Baggott holding thirteenth, nearly half a minute behind (39:27).
Then followed Peter Green 37th (40:51), Andre Waring 47th (41:20), John Meagher, 50th (41:50). Michael Dowel (53rd, 42:02) was in touch with John. Chris Bradford (42:54) held 65th position. Zac Hunter (44:23) was making progress and passing athletes as he commenced his fourth lap. David Jimenez (45:19) and Tony Langelaan (46:34) were also going well. Garth Calder completed the third lap in around 47:29.
Jack Rayner finally broke away from Toby Rayner to win the race, becoming one of the youngest winners of this historical event. Nathan Hartigan fought back to pass Nick Earl in the concluding lap to take the bronze medal, with Nick Wightman finishing fifth a little way behind.
Will Potter ran exceptionally well to cross in sixth place. His previous race was not a true reflection of his fitness and competitiveness. Will gained Victorian representation last year and there is no reason to suspect that this can be attained in 2016. It is wonderful to see him racing at his best and it appears that there is the capacity for even James O’Connell performed brilliantly for seventh place. James had been disappointed with his run at Wandin Park and this demonstrated clearly that he is in excellent form. A top ten finish is a really great achievement and there will be more improvement to come this winter season. Likewise Dion Finocchiara, in finishing tenth, also showed how well he is running and how fit he is. Nick Baggott strode over the finishing line in 12th place. This is a great effort as well. Nick continues to impress at every outing and it would appear that he is in the best form of his life. Peter Green, 38th and Andre Waring, 50th, completed the Division 1 team. We believe that Box Hill won the team competition from SSH and Melbourne University.
Others to finish for our club in Division 2 were the amazing John Meagher (51st) and winner of his age division, Michael Dowel, who will do better as the season progresses and he leaves injury behind, 55th, Chris Bradford, 73rd, Zac Hunter 74th, David Jimenez 100th and Tony Langelaan who was 129th. John’s effort was incredible, reminiscent of the evergreen Steve Moneghetti.
Garth Calder was 138th, Jackson Deane, 159th, Peter Stefanos, 182nd, Luke Crozier, 197th, Graeme Olden, 217th, Robert Sanbridge, 225th, Anthony Whitby, 238th, Conor Yung (248th), Simon St Hill, 292nd and Andrew Tunne, 326th.
Please note that these positions are those published provisionally on AV’s web site and will be revised.
Now we turn our attention to the 15 K Road Championship of Victoria, held around Lake Wendouree at Ballarat. If we are to maintain our lead in Division 1 and challenge for the premiership in other divisions we need every athlete available to compete.

VICTORY AT WANDIN PARK
After winning a close contest in round 1 of XCR’16, Box Hill men’s Premier Division team again performed strongly to take another close victory in round 2 at Wandin Park last Saturday.
This new cross country course proved to be very tough, with jumps and some very steep hills.
Led by Steve Dinneen in sixth place, our top six runners all performed well to give our team a narrow victory and put Box Hill on top of the ladder.
We also had a win in the men’s over 50 division, with John Meagher winning this age group and Peter Stefanos (12th) and Chris O’Connor (20th) doing enough to give us the team win.
It was encouraging to see four open men’s teams complete this event.
Our women’s team, by contrast, was not at full strength, but we expect more runners to take part as the year progresses. A special mention also to some of our juniors, who placed exceedingly well, in particular Thomas Diamond who finished 4th in the under 14s and Matt O’Donnell, 4th in the under 20s

Cross Country races, Wandin Park 7 May 2016
The Victorian Men’s 8 k Cross Country Championship and Women’s 6 k Cross Country Championship races were held at Wandin Park near Wandin North on Saturday 7 May. Junior races were also run. It was a warm day with direct sunshine and a great spectacle with the undulating scenery affording good opportunities to watch the races from numerous vantage points.
The course was a very challenging, a bit like what real Cross Country used to be like, extremely hilly with barriers to clear, and anyone who finished their race could be well-satisfied with their efforts, especially if they did not have to stop to walk.
We had a really impressive turnout for the senior men’s event with four senior Men’s teams finishing. At the time of writing it appears that Box Hill won Premier Division team’s race from St Stephens Harriers and APS, and it appears that our Division 2 team could have finished third behind Doncaster and Western Athletics.
When the starter sent the field on its way, Will Potter and Steve Dinneen were the foremost Box Hill athletes in the leading group. In the race at Drouin last year, Will made a massive breakthrough in coming seventh and, no doubt he would have liked to have improved on this this year. Nick Baggott, James O’Connell and Dion Finocchiaro, who all had a strong start as well, were positioned just behind Will and Steve. Peter Green and John Meagher were moving well but perhaps 30 to 40 seconds further back from our second group of athletes. Andrew Waring and Michael Dowel were a little behind them and both running comfortably.
Ben Ashkettle (Doncaster) made a break on the field in the first lap. Behind him were Nick Wightman (Geelong), Mitch Brown (Ess), Jack Davies (Ball), Jack Rayner (Wes) and Nick Earl, with Steve Dinneen and Will Potter in close attendance. Nick Baggott was running a very strong race and picking up places as was Dion Finocchiaro. Andre Waring took the first lap coolly, but passed at least 20 other athletes in his second lap as he roared home.
In the second lap, the lead changed as Ben Ashkettle slipped off the lead and Mitch Brown got away from the other athletes. Nick Wightman held second and Jack Davies came into a medal winning position. Later, Ben Ashkettle surged past both Wightman and Davies to claim second place and Nick Wightman improved to hold the bronze medal position. So the race was won clearly by Mitch Brown, with Ashkettle, second and Wightman third. Steve Dinneen got past several athletes around and crossed the line in sixth place. His was a well-judged and competitive effort and showed that he is more than capable of mixing with the best Victorian Cross Country athletes. Not too far behind was Nick Baggott, twelfth, who ran an excellent, disciplined race and is now not far away from being a top 10 contender. One place behind him was Dion Finocchiaro, who is extremely fit at the moment and appears to be running in the best from of his life, despite a very heavy training regime. The ever-reliable James O’Connell raced home as hard as he could to claim 21st position, another fine performance. Will Potter finished next, 22nd, after conceding a number of places in the second lap. But he finished the race, which showed great strength of character, and, by doing so, he gave our team the opportunity to win the race, which was a commendable and courageous effort. As noted above, Andre Waring had a brilliant second lap. Unfortunately, he was omitted from the provisional results, possibly as a result of the failure of his timing chip. Daniel Balassone, now stationed in Sydney, ran in his Sydney team’s strip by invitation and also had a good run placing 30th, 19 seconds in advance of Andre. Peter Green, still recuperating from a bad run of health, ran through in 40th place with John Meagher running a great race, placing 50th. He is truly an extra-ordinary athlete and a class above the others in his age group. Other Box Hill athletes to make the top 100 were Michael Dowel, returning from injury, 58th, Chris Bradford, 73rd, Michael Vaughan, 79th, Welday Mebrahtu, 84th and Zac Hunter 92nd.
Provisional results can be found below but there will be subsequent amendments because a number of men and women were omitted from the results published on the web site.
The women’s race was conducted over a six kilometre course. There were obstacles to vault and avoid and the hills were tough, long and grinding. It was a very challenging course, indeed. Gemma Maini took the lead early with Virginia Moloney (Collingwood) in close attendance, with Tarli Bird (Glenhuntly, third. Others at the front of the field included Samantha Prima (Knox), Cassie Higham (Glenhuntly), Anna Kelly (South Melbourne) and Kate Seibold (Knox). Tracey Austin from Malvern gradually moved forward as the race progressed. Our best placed athlete was June Petrie, who worked her way into 40th place according to the provisional results. We believe she actually finished 42nd. Rachel Johnson is competing again and she did well to place 89th and will certainly improve in later races. Other Division 1 team members were Pia Hunter, 126th, Megan Sloane, 139th and Caitlin Harrison, 152nd.
Matt O’Donnell ran a great race in the Under 20 Men’s competition to finish 4th. He ran well the whole way and with a little improvement still to come, it’s only a matter of time before he steps onto the podium. Alex Ritchie placed 8th in the same race, running an exceptionally determined race. He is also improving every time he pulls on the spikes or flats, Jack Prendergast placed 27th, with Carlos Norman who was 28th with a whirlwind finishing burst. Conor Yung crossed the line in 31st Our Under 20 team appears to have finished in fourth place behind Knox, Western Athletics and Glenhuntly.
Chloe Rosenberg ran very well in the Under 20 women’s race, being in a prominent position and placing 10th at the finishing line.
Lucas Pamminger acquitted himself well in the Under 18 race, crossing the line in 11th position, with a really strong finishing kick.
Thomas Diamond gave a very fine account of himself in the Under 14 2 k Cross Country finishing fourth in 7:18, just 4 seconds down on the bronze medallist.

BOX HILL OFF TO A GREAT START AT JELLS PARK
Box Hill started the XCR’16 cross country and road racing season in fine form, with wins in three divisions, including the men’s premier division. We also picked up silver medals in three other divisions.
It was great to see fifteen Box Hill teams (made up of 55 athletes) line up for this first event of the winter season.
A brilliant last leg from Will Potter saw our men’s premier division take out an exciting win. Great runs from Steve Dinneen, James O’Connell, Peter Green, Nick Baggott and Dion Finocchiaro, saw Box Hill in a three way tie for the lead when Will took off on the final leg of the relay. He took the lead immediately and held it all the way to the finish.
See Ian Sloane’s full report below.
Our Under 20 men’s team won an equally exciting race, with Scott McKenzie coming from 37 seconds behind on the last leg to take the lead in the final stages and win by just 2 seconds.
The Under 14 boys team of Murray Lovass, Connor Ogilvie and Mac Anderson had a huge win, with the 2nd team five minutes behind.
Box Hill teams finished 2nd in the women’s Under 16, men’s Over 40 and Men’s Over 50 divisions.
Our women’s premier division team, was in fourth position, only a few seconds outside of the top three, after the first three runners, but with a number of our women unavailable this week and despite the best efforts of our final two runners, the team dropped back to eighth.
A special congratulations and welcome to our new members, Conor Yung, Jackson Deane, Brent Harris, Robert Ashbridge and Steve Ross who competed for the Club for the first time.
Thanks to all those who helped with officiating and time keeping, Grant O’Donnell, Peter Lovass, John Rives, Megan Sloane, Ian Sloane, Jo Hajjar, Andrew Hester, Kirsty Ritchie, Francis Pamminger, Simone Lovass, Chris Muirden, Amelia Savige, Julie Norney and Georgie Meehan

CLUB 5K HANDICAP: 11 April, 2016
Box Hill AC has run this event now for 25 years and inevitably someone runs the Bennettswood course a lot quicker than predicted. That happened again this year. However, of more interest was the fact that we had four runners who bettered 16 minutes which is noteworthy. I don’t think that this has occurred previously in our race.
Isabelle Napier’s estimate of her expected race time was the most inaccurate of all the starters and consequently, she won by over two minutes. This is sure to be remembered by the handicapper next year! Nevertheless this was an extremely good run by Isabelle, who is not used to running more than 30m on the pole vault runway! Second was Tony Rule who also ran much faster than predicted. Third was Blake Lucas who was clearly treated way too sympathetically by the handicapper. Andre Waring impressed in fourth place recording a very quick 15:46. Others to run extremely fast were Matt O’Donnell; (15:52), Alex Ritchie (15:58) and Steve Dinneen, who ran 15:13 in a fine hit out prior to the Cross Country Relays. Zac Hunter also performed creditably recording 16:32. The fastest female was Julie Norney who took 19:12 to complete this relatively flat course.
Thanks to Peter Stefanos, Graeme Olden and Chris O’Connor who attended to the setting out of the course and the handicap marks and Bert Pelgrim who took the times at the finish.

Jells Park Relays 16 April 2016
Box Hill AC had a brilliant opening to the 2016 XCR Winter season, with the highlight being a cracking win in the Men’s Premier Division. We also won the Under 14 Boys’ Relay and the Under 20 Men’s relay. This was a really great performance and the Division 1 team members performed extraordinarily well, not taking the lead until a decisive last leg from Will Potter who ran 33 seconds faster than he did in 2015, a tremendous improvement and had the tenth fastest time of all the competitors. Three hundred and eleven teams were entered, which is a clear sign of a very successful Cross Country and Road season to come. .
Last year, James O’Connell and Nick Baggott distinguished themselves with excellent runs in Division 2. This year they absolutely excelled in Division 1. James O’Connell improved his time over the two lap circuit by a huge 31 seconds, a great improvement and Nick Baggott improved by a massive 80 seconds, a monumental breakthrough and a wonderful achievement with a time of 18:55. He is now in the elite area of distance running performance with this effort. Peter Green put up one of Box Hill’s gamest performances in recent years, after being ill during the week. Despite being crook, he .still competed and improved his time from 2015 by nine seconds. That was a sensational effort. His gutsy run enabled Box Hill to stay in contention. If he had not run, and run this time, Box Hill would not have won the gold or the silver medal. We would probably have come away with the bronze.
We expected that Melbourne University, Geelong and Knox would be our main opponents. Knox had a depleted team so they were not in contention, once the race commenced. We overlooked APS and SSH both of whom excelled themselves, especially SSH, which has not really been competitive since the days of the Sansonetti brothers, Max Little, Gary Bentley, Andrew Garnham, Steve Roach and others, performed at the top level of their capability. Long term SSH official, Pat Robinson, who is also an integral part of the Victorian Milers Club, said after the race, whilst watching the medal presentation ceremony that she was absolutely thrilled with the SSH result. Well, we came away with the main prize, a season’s opening win, which was sensational. Box Hill didn’t actually get to the lead until; the last leg, with Will Potter running in the most determined way. It was clear from when he took off, he was a man on a mission and he had he goods.
The race started with Steve Dinneen leading off for Box Hill. He ran an outstanding opening leg. He was in fourth place after the first lap, running a swift first lap of 9:11. Melbourne University led, followed by Geelong and APS. In the second lap, Steve got past his APS opponent and ran through the changeover point in 3rd place. Melbourne Uni’s Andrew Buchanan ran the fastest time of the day, recording 17:45, a huge effort, 51 seconds in front of our team. Geelong were 13 seconds ahead with Julian Spence running 18:23.
James O’Connell was next off and he completed the first lap in second place just behind his Geelong opponent with two other teams, APS and Glenhuntly, breathing down his neck. James held on as best he could in the second lap in improving his 2015 time by a very big margin as noted above, but the athlete from Melbourne University and A PS overtook the Geelong runner and James in the second lap, but of importance was that all the teams were in sight. .
As mentioned earlier, Peter Green had been most unwell during the week and he ran a great, determined leg, as well as improving his best time on the course by a significant amount. SSH moved from fifth to second in this leg. Melbourne University remained in the lead with a 43 second margin over SSH. APS were a further 17 seconds behind, third and Geelong was fourth, 18 seconds behind APS, with Box Hill fifth 9 seconds behind Geelong. We were still in the mix with strength in the back end, plus we suspected that Melbourne University might have run their three strongest runners in the first three legs, so were moderately confident that we could figure in the medals.
Nick Baggott was next out and ran brilliantly taking a massive chunk out of his best time. First he passed the Geelong runner in the first lap, and then he got by the APS runner, so when he completed his two circuits, Box Hill was third12 seconds behind second-placed SSH and 26 seconds behind the leaders, Melbourne University. This was a spellbinding contest with the only constant, at this point being Melbourne University holding the lead. Nicks leg kept us right in the hunt and he handed over to Dion Finocchiara.
Dion is extremely fit at the moment and he ran a marvellous leg. He drew lewvel with the athletes from APS and SSH at the end of his first circuit. These three teams were together at the end of his leg, although he had moved in front of APS. There was only a second in it, with Will Potterr to run our last leg. We were pretty confident that we were definitely on track for a medal, but what colour would it be. The leading three teams had opened a gap of more than a minute over Geelong, fourth and Melbourne University, fifth who were close together.
Will ran a really quick first lap so had built up a lead of 20 seconds over SSH and 26 seconds over APS. When he appeared in the distance on his way to the finish, he had maintained the lead, with APS passing SSH for second and Will maintained his lead until the finish, although he needed to be reminded to actually cross the official finishing point which he did quickly. So the outcome was that we won the Men’s Premier division by 11 seconds over APS with SSH a further 9 seconds behind in third place. This was really great result for Box Hill and we hope to have several athletes who have been ill or injured return to strengthen the team for races later in the season.
The Division 2 team faced a hard race, with the three top placed teams performing extremely well. Essendon, relegated from Division 1 a couple of years ago, had a good team but were eclipsed by Western Athletics, anchored by a brilliant first leg by Cody Shanahan who ran the second fastest time of the day (17:48). This was a phenomenal effort. Mitch Brown ran the last leg for Essendon, and ran a super quick 17:51, but couldn’t overhaul the leader. Klarie McIntyre and Andre Waring both ran quickly and their times, along with our other athletes who competed, are listed below.

Saturday 9 April 2016 – 5 km Handicap
April 9, 2016
