5km Club Handicap, 8 April, Gardiner’s Creek

April 9, 2017

CLUB 5K HANDICAP

Congratulations to Steve Dinneen (fastest time) and to Brodie Cross (handicap winner) who were the victors at the Box Hill Athletic Club annual 5km handicap race at Gardiner’s Creek on Saturday.

Thank you to Ian Sloane, who set the handicaps and wrote the race report below.

Box Hill 5 K Handicap 8 April, 2017

Box Hill AC has run this event for 27 years at various venues but more recently, at the Bennettswood course. There were 38 entries but a number of athletes did not take their place on the start line

Apart from the inaccuracy of some of the earlier finishers in estimating their time, there were several highlights.  Steve Dinneen, who ran 15:13 in 2016, ran even faster this year (15:10) holding off Sam Dipnall in a spirited contest by a mere one second margin, with Sam running 15:11.

There was only one watch recording at the finish and a number of runner’s times were what they recorded themselves, an estimate or no time taken. Brodie Cross was first over the line, running 2 minutes 59 seconds quicker than the time he submitted.  The handicapper is sure to put a substantial amount of lead in his saddle bags next year and the same treatment will probably apply to Josh Macken and Michelle Biggs who finished second and third respectively.

Thanks to Peter Stefanos and Chris O’Connor who attended to the setting out of the course and the handicap marks and Andrew Egginton and Megan Sloane who assisted at the finish.

2016-2017 February 12, Sunday, Shield Final, Albert Park

February 12, 2017

BOX HILL WINS FOUR PREMIERSHIPS!

Box Hill had a great day at the 2016/17 Shield Competition Finals at Albert Park on Sunday, with four of our eight teams winning the premiership in their division.

Congratulations to our men’s U14, men’s U18 and men’s and women’s 40+ teams who were all triumphant on Sunday.

Despite some bad luck with injuries/unavailability that dashed the hopes of a couple of our teams, it was still a great day for the Club, with Box Hill being the only club to win more than one premiership.

A special thank you to Andrew Wilcox, Amanda Harper, Leanne Bertacco and Simone Lovass who helped with team management and to Mark Doehmann, Rachel Johnson, Simon Evans, Nick Carah, Sharron Meager, Mark Stewart and all the others who worked as club helpers on the day.

Box Hill finished 2nd in the open men’s division and failed to defend the title we won last year. Unfortunately the team was not at full strength, with Mo Zeed unable to hurdle and Matt Harcourt fronting up with a dodgy hamstring and a very heavy cold unable to hurdle or pole vault. It was a brave effort to finish 2nd under the circumstances and with just a little bit of luck we can hopefully return to the top of the table next year.
